Kotobukiya Ermin Figure

I received my Ermin figure produced by Kotobukiya a couple of weeks ago. Actually, it arrived about the same time I received a whole bunch of other figures from different orders I made, so I kind of forgot about mentioning this figure. I just added it to my tower of unopened figures. (^^;)

Ermin is a figure from the Japanese PS3 game called Tears to Tiara, a SRPG game with some visual novel aspects to the game. Already, there have been two other figures made by Kotobukiya based on two of the characters from the game. Those are “Riannon” and “Octavia”. Of course, I have preordered them and received them a while back.

This time, the character “Ermin”, a housework fairy that is very energetic and happy. The figure is of her in a lively pose in her maid outfit which accurately portrays her in the game.

The quality of the figure is again really highly detailed and I really like the pose. The figure came wrapped carefully in plastic protective wrap which took a while to take off, and I found out when trying to take off a piece of plastic wrap that her skirt can be taken off! (^^;)

I like how her outfit is like the traditional old style maid outfit rather than the fancy ones you tend to see in other anime characters.

I really wonder what other characters from this game will be turned into figures.
I hope the Suiru will be the next one made into a figure…

Busy Days

It’s been a while since I last wrote. I’ve been quite busy lately. Two weekends ago, I bought a whole ton of figures from Waicon, so I had a bit of trouble trying to secure some space for them all. This meant spending most of that weekend tidying up and rearranging things in my room. It was a rather tiring task, but I did notice one thing while rearranging the figures and making room for them. I had noticed that I have about 100 figures.

glasscabinet1 deskfigures3 ps3figures

A few days later, my big order from HLJ that I wrote about previously finally arrived in the mail. It arrived in a giant box, much larger than any others I’ve received before. All of the figures that arrived are really high quality expensive ones that I wanted to open up and check out. Unfortunately, it seems I again need to make more room to display the figures. I really have no idea where to display them. My computer desk is already full of figures. So currently I have the new figures mint in their boxes as a tower of figures next to my room door.

By the way, this reminds me, I often read the anime blog: dannychoo.com and once when checking out the classifieds section of his blog, I noticed that there was an Aussie Sydney seller that was selling some figures quite cheaply. One that caught my eye was one of Rindou Rina, which I have never heard of or seen before, but looked like it was worth more than the seller was asking for. I ended up being successful with my offer and received the figure shortly afterwards. I actually bought it before my Waicon figure shopping spree, but it took a bit longer to arrive but I wasn’t too fussed about how long it took. The figure was very well packed, and it too has been added to the tower of HobbyLink Japan figures.

Yet another figure also turned up that week. This time the figure was purchased from Ebay UK. This figure is actually quite expensive to buy even in apan, but I managed to get it as an only bidder bargain on ebay. The UK pound to Aussie dollar exchange rate is really terrible at the moment, but even with that, I still managed to get the figure for about only $35AU including postage. It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten a good bargain on ebay. The figure is definately original, and has also been added to the tower of figures.

konomi boxed desk clearer

Besides for figures, I also bought some more prints, posters and shitajiki (pencil boards) from one of the illustrators at Waicon. Since I bought a lot of them, she specially drew a quick sketch for me of whatever I wanted. I ended up getting her to draw Negi Springfield from Mahou Sensei Negima in a battle pose. I am looking forward to see how it will turn out.

Also, when tidying up my room, I put few pictures I liked on my wall for display. I had to take down my Fate/Stay Night poster to make room for it, but in it’s place I have some nice frames that I put the pictures in. It really looks a lot nicer than before. Since I didn’t have enough frames, I only put up this many, but I plan to put some more later on.

Anyways, the last couple of weeks have been busy. Last week, I registed an account at an art community site called DeviantArt. I initially only registed so I could leave some nice comments to some of the artists whom I bought prints from at Waicon. However, since I registered from the site, I decided to upload some pictures of my own attempts at drawing and some photos of my garage kit figure I made of Petoko. It was quite interesting. After uploading my first photo, I already had received like 3 comments for it. Also, a week after making my account, my DeviantArt page ended up getting 75 views! I don’t consider myself good at drawing, but many kind people left comments such as “Keep up the drawing!” and “I’m looking forward to your next picture”, which made me feel quite good about my work and motivated to post more drawings. I even found a Japanese guy that sculpts full scratch figures and robots from putty. I had a nice conversation with him, and he’s even blogged about me on his site.

My DeviantArt page is http://raptor-tk.deviantart.com/.
Please check it out!

Currently, I’m working on a new drawing. It’s still in progress, but I decided to upload a sample to get some suggestions. I’m still a beginner, so if you see anything odd, please let me know so I can fix it and get better.

Lastly, on the weekend, I had my first Jujitsu grading. I succesfully graded from my white belt to my next belt (White with a yellow stripe though it). I’m quite happy about it.

Waicon 2009

Last week, I went to an anime convention called “Waicon 2009” held in Perth, Western Australia. Despite the fact that I am passionate about anime, this was actually the first time I had been to a local anime convention. (^^;)

Previously, I have been to some anime events in Japan such as Comic Market 73, World Hobby Festival, and Jump Festa, so I really wasn’t sure if it was worth going to a local anime convention. Now that I’ve been to one, I can say for sure that it was definately worth going to. I had a really good time at the convention. I wasn’t really expecting much from it, but it was suprisingly professionally run, despite being an amateur run convention and turned out to be one of the best weekends I’ve had in a while.

Waicon was held in the Perth Convention Center. As I often pass this building on my way to work from the bus port, it’s actually a place I know quite well.

convention center outside

Given that I didn’t really know many other people in Perth that shared an interest in Anime, I decided to make 50 Otaku business cards to give out during the convention to help me socialise and increase the number of local anime-liking friends.  I actually came up with the idea about midnight the night before when I was about to sleep. (^^;)

At first, I had a pretty boring design, but slowly I managed to keep adjusting it until I ended up with a nice design that I liked. As I like collecting figures, I decided on using a figure picture as the background image and put my blog details and email address.

Over the two days, I managed to hand out 32 of the cards. I am hoping that those people do find the time to check out my blog. If you are one of those people, please leave a comment and say hi. (^_-)

otaku cards otaku card

For the first day, I woke up early and arrived at the grounds at about 2 hours before the official opening time. There were already a small number of people lining up, but it wasn’t a particularly a long queue. As there wasn’t any queue near the registration desk, it didn’t take long at all to buy a weekend pass and to sign up to PANIC, the anime club that hosted the event.

Despite there being only a few people waiting around, there were already more people in cosplay outfits than I had initially imagined.

The weekend pass cost me $45AU. At first I thought the entrance fees were rather excessive, but now that I look back at it all, it really was quite cheap given that I really enjoyed myself over the two days full of entertainment.

As the opening time of the convention approached, the number of people arriving increased, and the queue started to look more like the queues I was used to in Japan. The registration desk itself was quite packed.

When the convention opened, all the early people attended the opening ceremony. Essentially they introduced the event and encouraged everyone to take this opportunity to socialize with each other.

When the opening ceremony finished, I went around to check out the stalls selling anime related goods. My first priority was the “Empire Toys” stall. Empire Toys is the main anime store in Perth, and at the convention, their stall sold cheap figures and manga. As I like to collect figures, the figures they had on sale were the main attraction for me.  As a result, I ended up buying 18 figures in one go in the first few minutes into the convention. (^_^;)

Given that the figures were sold at only $25AU each, it was extremely cheap. One of the staff members from the store who recognised me even gave me a huge $50AU discount because of my large purchase. Thanks Empire Toys! In the end, I spent about $375AU on figures there. I only bought the figures that suited my tastes, and fortunately for me, that meant almost one of each of all of the figures. The figures were extremely high quality and all of them are originals imported from Japan. I don’t know how exactly they got reduced to such low prices, but from experience, each of those figures would normally cost about $70-$100AU each.

Apart from figures, I also bought quite a few art prints, posters and sketches. I too would like to be able to draw awesome pictures like these artists, so I figured if I had some of their original artwork and displayed them in my room, it would help motivate me to draw more and improve. At the moment, I am thinking about how to display them and even thinking of framing one or two.

After all my shopping, I went to some anime-related panels and workshops. They had a huge number available, but the ones that I could make it to were the “Bootleg panel”, “Fan fiction panel”, “How to draw manga workshop” and the “Gundam workshop”. As some were hosted simutaneously, I couldn’t attend everything I wanted to go to, but regardless, I had a great time and was quite satisfied with the ones I went to.

The cosplay at the convention was quite interesting. I have seen cosplay in Japan at the Comic Market and Jump Festa events before, but somehow, the Aussie cosplay has a somewhat different feel to it. It seems that one of the main motivators for cosplayers here is the Cosplay competition. Many people dress up in cosplay to compete by performing various skits and plays in front of an audience, entertaining the fans and having fun. I have to admit that the cosplay competition was the main highlight of the convention. It was fantastic.

Out of the people that attended the convention, it seemed that almost half the people attending dressed up as one of their favorite characters. I was suprised at how passionate the attendees were about the anime they liked. As for me, It makes me feel that I have a way to go before I’d join in, but I did feel that I was missing out in the fun. (^o^)

Anyways, during the weekend, I took quite a few photos of the cosplayers. I decided to put them up on Flickr for everyone to check it all out. Not all my photos turned out very well, but I cleaned up and uploaded what I could. To view the images, click on the image below and if you like, leave a few comments and tell me what you think.

Also if anyone sees themselves in one of the photos and doesn’t want it to be online, please let me know.

After the convention finished, I was pretty tired from a lack of sleep. Since I wanted to make the Otaku cards, I ended up sleeping late, and I also woke early both of the days to get in early a the event.

I spent a bit of time after the convention organising the figures I had bought and looking for a place to store them all as well as taking photos of my shopping. Apart from that, I spent a while copying my photos to my computer, cleaning up some of the photos, tagging them and preparing this article.

I found this first experience at a local anime convention a very enjoyable experience. I suggest any other people who haven’t been before to definitely give Waicon a shot.

By the way, this year the number of attendees was over 3000 people! Apparently that is over twice the number of last year. It defintely makes me feel a lot better to know that there is a large number of anime fans in Perth. (^_^)

Bargain sale! Figure shopping spree! (*^_^*)

It’s still the middle of the week, but strangely enough, today has been a fantastic day! About a week ago, I bidded on some anime related goods on ebay being sold by my local anime shop. The auction detail page lacked detail about the items for sale, and had a tiny thumbnail showing some anime-ish goods. However from that horrible picture, there was one item that caught my eye. That was a garage kit (a figure you assemble and paint yourself) made by Kotobukiya of the character Sakura Matou from the game and anime “Fate/Stay Night”. Actually there were TWO of them being sold together, so I bidded on it immediately.

That garage kit normally is priced at 7000 yen (was about $90AU at the time, currently $118AU). At the moment, that figure is no longer in productions so it would be rather difficult to get your hands on. Apart from perhaps some 2nd hand figure shops in Japan, you’d have a hard time finding one even in Japan.

ebay-bag-o-goodies

Anyways, I ended up winning the auction of the garage kit and the other various anime items for my initial bid of $30AU. I’m so happy! It was so cheap, and came with all sorts of other goods too. I probably may sell the duplicate items, but given my tendency to collect and keep everything i get my hands on, I find it difficult to get rid of or sell things.

I won the bit about 2:30pm today. Since the store was close to work, I simply went to pick it up. After I asked the shop attendant about the anime goods I had won, I talked to them about the Anime Convention “WaiCon 2009” which will be held over the weekend. Of course, that shop was participating as a vendor, and from my discussions with them, I found out that what kind of things they were planning to sell. It seems that they will be selling, PVC figures that have been taken out of their boxes, e.g. for display, and selling them for very cheap prices to essentially get rid of them. It was then, that I realized that the glass cabinet next to me was full of unboxed figures all displayed looking really nice and also expensive looking. They were really high quality figures.

bargain figures figures and gk background figures 3 figures 2

Those figures were ones that originally cost about 6000-7000 yen (or over $100AU) each, but for some reason, they were selling for a mere $20-$35 per figure! Because of the the strong yen and poor Aussie dollar, the exchange rate is so crap, so importing figures from Japan recently has been rather expensive. Anyways, as you could tell, I ended up buying almost all the figures that were displayed. It was so cheap and luckily, most of the figures were the type that I liked, so I’m happy.

By the way, that reminds me, last weekend, I actually made a really huge figure order at an online store called HLJ. They had a big sale going on too, so I bought a lot, but it seems that instead of sending it by SAL post, they posted using Express EMS post which ended up driving the price up. In the end, it was about $600AU  or 35,482 yen. Even now, I’m in shock at the price. Although since I managed to buy about $600AU worth of figures locally for only $225AU, I feel I have it all balanced out and am quite relieved.

hlj order

This time, I just bought the figures that I liked from my local shop, but now as I think more and more, I really should just buy all of those figures on display since they are so cheap. Even if I don’t have the place in my room for them all. Although that thought doesn’t distract me from my shopping. (^_^;)

Full Scratch Figure

This weekend, I started making a full scratch figure. “Full scratch” is a term used in model making where you make something from scratch using a particular material. This is actually my 2nd attempt at making a full scratch figure. The first time, I just went off and tired to make it without having any idea about how I’d go about doing it. Which of course resulted in failure. I went off on the wrong approach and it ended up parts of the sculpture collapse under the weight when it dried. (^_^;)

This time, I regained my enthusiasm to build my own full scratch figure from a net friend that actually lives in the same city as me. Half a year ago, I remember explaining to him in a message about how to build full scratch figures. Since then, it had been a while since I went back to the forum, but while I was away, he got really good at making his full scratch figure. I’m really suprised at his progress. At the moment his figure is close to completion. He even has a “work in progress” blog detailing his every step with making the figure. After seeing all this, I’ve decided to give full scratch figure making another shot.

The materials required for full scratch is the same as for garage kit building, so it was quite easy to get started. I had already stocked up on packets of “Mr. CLAY” when I last went to Japan. I ended up buying 5 packets from the Kotobukiya store in Osaka. So I’m fairly prepared in terms of clay. When I first started, I didn’t really know how to even get started, so I ordered the books “Lets make a cute girl figure” and “Master of Figures – For beginners” books which show step by step instructions on how to make the figures using air drying clay. Besides for the instruction books, I also have a Figure making DVD called “Azusa’s Figure making course” which teaches you how to make figures using sculpey oven bake clay. Anyways, I have more than enough to prepare for this 2nd attempt. (*^_^*)

clay-tools-putty-top-down-angle clay-tools-putty figureframeinstructions.jpg

Anyways, this time I plan to make a figure of one of the many characters from the manga “Magical Teacher Negima!”. Since there are a lot of candidates that would be good to make into figures, it was difficult to decide on one. My favorite characters at the moment are “Yuuei Ayase”, “Chisame Nagatanigawa” and “Negi Springfield”. In the end, I decided to choose a character not from those 3 favorites, but instead chose a side character called “Collet”.

yuuei-and-collet-manga collet collet2 collet3

To prepare, I first did a google image search on the character so I could collect some reference pictures. After doing that, I referred to the images I saved and used a program called “3D Custom Girl” to make a 3d model of the character. Since the first time I made a full scratch figure, I didn’t have anything to refer to in terms of proportions, the figure I made ended up rather odd looking. This time, to overcome that problem, I decided that using a 3d model in a 3D program would be the ultimate reference tool when making the figure.

While making the figure, I can rotate the 3d model and compare my sculpt with it to see what bits are not right. The software also allows you to change the pose of the 3d model and even change the clothes, so it really is a great tool. Actually, the program actually is a popular adult game in Japan, but I find it a great fast way to prototype a 3d anime character and use it as a reference model for scratch build figures.  Honest! (^o^)

3d program 3d collet

When I worked on building the figure, I tried a few approaches. Using a wire skeleton seemed like a good idea, but it was rather hard to use as the wire I had was quite thick and difficult to bend without pliers. Last year, I bought some Wave branded plastic posable figure frames designed for the purpose of full scratch figure building, but i too found this to be not ideal. It seemed that the pose that I wanted was simply not possible with it. In the end, I followed the method in “Lets make a cute girl figure” and found it was the best choice for me. It involved preparing some basic shaped pieces to form the base and use them when fully dried to build up the figure by adding more clay onto it.

Currently, I have made the trunk of the body and the upper part of the legs of the figure. I did a fair share of applying and cutting off bits of clay to and from the figure to get it close to the reference model. I ended up spending a long time on it, but since today (Monday) is a holiday, it was okay. I think I ended up spending half a day working on it.

White Knight Chronicles

This weekend, I planned to write in this blog a lot earlier, but it ended up being a lot more busier than normal. I actually wanted to work on continuing my Garage kit figure and writing more blog entries, but I only got to do a bit of both this weekend.

Friday, I had Karate class and on Saturday morning, I had Jujitsu followed by Tennis. Normally I’d play tennis at 1:30pm on Saturdays, but because of the weather report (36 degrees for Saturday and 39 for Sunday), I was gonna be very hot, and thus the starting time was changed to make it night tennis.

I was actually free on Saturday during midday and all of Sunday, but because of the temperature, I really wasn’t in the mood to do anything, so I ended up spending all my time indoors. I prefer to work on my garage kit outdoors, but today, it was just too hot, so i ended up spending a little bit of time on it indoors. Also, I planned to write more blog entries, but one of my PS3 games “White Knight Chronicles” I had ordered previously arrived, so I ended up playing that all weekend long instead.

The game is an RPG with really incredible graphics. The battle system is much like that of an online game. Well actually, you can connect to a server and do quests with other players, so I guess it is also an online game.. (^^;).

Anyways, The battle system took me quite a while to get used to. You have to customise your own battle commands to use in battle, and I had a hard time trying to choose a decent combination that worked best for me. Anyways, I ended up getting myself addicted to it. I initially felt that I wanted to finish off my other games that I had been playing halfway, but after trying out this new game for a bit, I kinda forgot that I was only trying out the game, and before I knew it, I had been playing the game for hours.

 shirokishi game

By the way, I ordered myself a copy of the latest Negima drama CD from HMV’s webpage. It was 3000 yen, but once it was converted to Aussie dollars, it was a bit more than I would normally pay. Still, since I had already bought the Negima OAD Limited edition manga which came with DVDs and a box, I decided that I wanted to complete the set.

Also, the “Megiddo” game I preordered and mentioned previously should be arriving soon. I am looking forward for all my shopping to arrive this week.

New years eve

On new years eve, I spent my time working on my garage kit figure. It had taken me quite a while to finish the corrections to the putty, but now the parts fit together almost perfectly without any gaps now. The next step is to spray some surfacer on it so I can identify any areas needing further surface work.

In order to use the airbrush, I needed to prepare my work area with some surfacer to spray, some paint thinner, my air compressor, the airbrush, some newspaper, tissues, water in a container and so on. It took about 20 mins or so to get it all sorted and set up how I wanted it.garage kit surfacer drying 2

To start things, I begun by blowing air over the kit pieces to get rid of any dust. Next, I used some sand paper to remove some of the excess putty I found when examining the pieces before spraying them with surfacer. I used my older airbrush for spraying the surfacer, however, I have having trouble with it and noticed it seemed blocked up a bit. I decided to try fix that by stopping and cleaning out the airbrush with some airbrush cleaner, however, even after that, it still had problems, so I gave up on using that airbrush. I really need to clean this old airbrush perhaps by soaking it in some cleaner. However, since I didn’t really feel up to doing that, I decided on just using my nice new airbrush that I got from Kotobukiya last year.

Since it had been a while since I had used an airbrush, I was worried about if I would spray a decent coat, but it seems I did nice job. I ended up finishing up a bottle of the Mr. RESIN Primer Surfacer although since I had several bottles of this spare, it wasn’t a problem. (^o^)

garage kit surfacer drying top angle garage kit surfacer drying

It was quite hot during that day. Outside, it was about 35-36 degrees, so it was rather uncomfortable. Also, while I was apraying the surfacer, not too far away there seemed to be a bush fire that broke out. Apparently it was caused by arson. Anyways, there were quite a few helicopters carrying large amounts of water flying back and forth over the house. It’s the first time this has happened. It was quite interesting to watch, although there was quite a bit of noise. Fortunately they managed to put the fire out. Still, as it was going on all the time while I was working on my garage kit, it did a good job at distracting me from my work. (^^;)

It took much longer that I expected to finish applying surfacer to all the pieces. Since I had to prepare everything for using the airbrush and also had to clean the gear and pack up afterwards which also took a while, I ended up finishing up at about 11pm.

garage kit surfacer garage kit surfacer close up

I had to cook my own dinner that day, so I decided on cooking Salmon cooked in flour with salt, pepper and other spices as I hadn’t eaten it for a while. When I finished cooking, it was already 11:50pm. As it was clost to the count down for new years, I quickly made my way to the TV and ate while watching the Sydney fireworks on TV.

Although I was quite exhaused after everything, all in all, it was an enjoyable new years eve.

Happy new year!

Happy new year everyone!

Since I was quite busy with Christmas and New Years, I never managed to find enough time to write in my blog. However, during that time, some interesting things happened, so I’ll be using that as some things to write about for future posts.

Last month, I strangely seemed to receive many of my pre-orders one after another. When I got the notification emails, I was half excited since I’d waited up to half a year for some orders, but also felt that the prices where quite expensive because of the poor exchange rate lately.

I also received my Haruhi bunny PVC figure made by Daiki Kougyou and my Miyuki-chan Figma. These PVC figures are probably among the small few that I’ve actually recieved so far. Previously, I’ve had most of my orders cancelled because of insufficient stock for all the preorders. Despite this, I still try to buy from them as they are a bit cheaper than buying direct from Japan using other shops, and also offer cheaper shipping.

The Haruhi figure is actually quite good. It’s about a 1/8 sized figure, but the base is quite large, so it look bigger. The pose is also quite lively.

The paintjob is about average, but is acceptable in my opinion. I also hear that there is a haruhi in a white bunny outfit too, but I prefer this one better.

This figure is one of those popular garage kit figures which has been made into a pre-painted figure.

Other things I bought in December was games. Lately, I have been getting interested in visual novel games, so I preordered the game “Kimi ga yobu, Megiddo no oka de” which was released on the 26th of December. It is made by Leaf, a famous visual novel game company which also made Tears to Tiara, the PS3 game I’m currently playing.

Although I say visual novel, this game seems to be more a hybrid between a visual novel and a RPG. At the moment, because of new years holidays in Japan, my copy still hasn’t been shipped yet. However, this is actually a good thing, because when I checked the exchange rate todya, the rate was much higher! Normally it was always sitting at $1AU = 60yen but today it’s now $1AU = 64.3 yen! I’m now glad that my game will probably be cheaper.

megiddo

(This is the Megiddo game. Though mine hasn’t been shipped yet…)

By the way, I also preordered the Japanese version of the PS3 RPG game called White Knight Chronicles. This time I decided on getting it from YesAsia. The reason being, that in my previous shopping spree at YesAsia, I received a $5 voucher in my email. So I ended up using that, was well as taking advantage of the free shipping.

The game was released on the 26th of December, though, it managed to get shipped before the new years break, so I expect to see it arrive next week or the following week.

The next game I plan to by is a PS3 game called Ryu ga gotoku 3 (Like a dragon 3 - also known as Yakuza in the US). Recently, I’ve been playing Ryu go gotoku Kenzan and it’s been really really enjoyable.

Ryu ga gotoku Kenzan really seems like you’re watching an action movie. It’s different to other games as it has many really well done mini games that are quite enjoyable and many side stories which keeps me busy spending many hours on it. This title is different from the other ones in it’s series because instead of being all about Yakuza, this one is actually based in Kyoto featuring the city Gion in the Edo period when there were a lot of Geisha.

The next Ryu ga gotoku 3 seems to be based in Okinawa (one of the islands south of Japan where Karate was founded).

Here are some Youtube videos I found of the games.

As you’d expect, Japanese games really rock!

I do wonder if these games would actually come out over here.

Hmmm.. I initially planned to write about new years and Christmas, but it seems I ended up writing about shopping and video games. (^_^;)

I’ll do that on the next post then… well maybe. (*^_^*)

Welcome to my blog

Hello, I’m an Australian born Chinese who has a great interest in Japanese. I have studied it for about 6 years both at university and then through self study. I have passed the JLPT level 1 and have now gotten to the level where I am reading novels in my free time. Still I feel that there is still a long way to go as I am always encountering many unknown kanji characters and expressions.

I have a great interest in Japanese Anime and would say that I could qualify as an Otaku as I enjoy collecting anime figures, manga, following the latest trends and recently even venturing into building and painting anime resin model kits (also known as garage kits). I also enjoy Karate, Jujitsu and reading Japanese light novels. Of course, I also enjoy writing a blog in Japanese to practice my composition.

I have a Japanese blog which is my main blog that I use to practice writing in Japanese, although I felt a need to make myself an English one so that my friends can make some sense of what I write in my main blog.

At the moment, my plan is to post translations of the Japanese blog for translation practice as well as writing here regularly too.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading this blog.

Cheers!

Running visual novel games on a VirtualBox hosted Win XP running under Vista

When I bought my new computer, I decided to get Windows Vista Ultimate with it. I chose Vista mainly because of the pretty GUI and the fact that the interface could be changed to Japanese localization instead of English.

Although Vista had it’s benefits, I had a few compatibility problems with it. One of them was with DirectX sound. It seems that there is a problem when a sound plays while another is still playing. The first sounds suddenly stops for a moment while the 2nd sound plays.

I’ve only recently started to play visual novel games, but when I do, the background music always pauses when The characters speak and when sound effects happen. Because of that, I couldn’t really enjoy the game at all. I searched on Google for the cause of the problem and from what I gather, Vista’s sound service has been rewritten from scratch and it seems to have problems with it which caused my compatibility problems.

This seems to be quite a bad bug, but there still seems to be no patch to fix it yet.

Anyways, I ended up installng VirtualBox, a PC virtualization software, so I could install Windows XP on it and play the visual novel games.

I wasn’t sure whether this would solve my problem, but when I tried it out, the game ran perfectly. Not a single problem with the sound. Also I found that if I pressed Alt + L, the game window would be displayed together with the host system’s windows.

Anyways, I’m happy that I’m now able to play the visual novel games without any problems.
I do find having to resort to using PC virtualization software to play games on Vista overkill, and it really does give me a bad impression of Vista’s compatibility.

Has anyone had sound problems like this on Vista before?
